Dominique de Menil, gouache on 300 lb Arches, 30" x 22".

As a Houstonian, I owe a massive debt of gratitude to this fascinating visionary and her husband, John de Menil. They did so much more to bring high art, modern art, weird art, masterful and thoughtful architecture, etc. to Houston than the Menil Collection, Cy Twombly Gallery, Rothko Chapel or Richmond Hall--Dominique was an ambassador for her adopted Texas; a time-twisting curator, collector and philanthropist who saw what Houston COULD be and where all that oil money could go. Famously, she closed her initial meeting with Renzo Piano re: her exacting ideas for the building of the Menil by telling him "Welcome to hell." She knew what she wanted and took no guff, and Houston was and is forever changed because of it.
