TORSO (MINE) 1 original drawing

$875.00

Charcoal on archival Fabriano paper, 11.75” x 16.25”, 2022. Signed. This is really intended to be part of a diptych with TORSO (MINE) 2, which starts where this one ends, but both can stand alone. I was thinking about Nobuyoshi Akaki and Joan Semmel (if you are unfamiliar, you’re in for a treat—look them up!) when I drew these pieces, which are based on phone photos I took of myself in the dark with a flash. Both were drawn using a reductive method, meaning that I taped off and blackened an entire rectangle of paper with compressed charcoal, then brought out the image in reverse, layer by layer, using erasers. It’s a painstaking process that’s not unlike seeing a Polaroid develop.
